End of regular season

We are in the middle of april and the girls season is quickly approaching its end. There are 13 games left with four of them being at home. !0 of them are in the month of april and they finish it off in early may with three games. They are in order going to be facing Colby college for one game, Vermont for three, one against Boston University at home, two at harvard, three home games against Albany and then 3 games at Binghamton to close the season off. I wish them the best of luck in the remaining and in the playoff stretch.

School and Softball.

I was chatting with freshmen catcher Whitney Spangler yesterday. We talked and compared both of our sports here at the university of Maine. I always thought hockey took alot of my time and i needed to sacrifice many things in order to be able to play at the college level. I didn't realize that it actually isn't that bad compared to the softball girls and their heavy schedule. It consists of 58 games which are spread through only 3 months. Most of those games are away due to the harsh weather in Maine, making it even harder for the girls to keep up with their school work. I mean if you look at it, I only play around 40 games in our season depending on how far we make it in the playoffs but these games are spread on a 7 month schedule. Hats off girls!

Why I Love Ball

Born in Mtl, Qc., not many kids grow up loving baseball, or softball for this matter. In Canada, you learn to skate before you can walk or talk. For me it was different, I didn't want to choose between hockey and baseball. In the summer, i would be playing with my t-ball, my Expos hard hat and my diaper. In the winter, I would be playing pond hockey till i could not feel my toes. Unfortunately organized hockey was much bigger and i had to stop playing baseball when I needed to put all of my focus on hockey. To this day, I still go watch my mother's softball tournament every summer and i am currently part of intramural slow pitch team called the WizzBangs.

Sunday Matchup cancelled

To any of you who were planning on following the girls this weekend, you might have a slight change in your schedule for sunday. The game schedule at Hartford on sunday has been cancelled do to inclement weather. I guess Maine isn't the only state with terrible weather this time of year. The team will go back in action tuesday at Colby college. The Black Bears can't complain about travelling this time, Colby College is only 40 minutes away, located in Waterville, Me. The game starts at 4:30 pm. This will be the only time both Maine colleges meet this year. In the past, this matchup has always been a good one.

Awful Weather!!!

I have seen it all! What is going on with the weather in Maine? I mean 12 inches of snow in april, you got to be kidding me. I'm sure the girls on the softball team are thinking the same way. They were supposed to have their home opener last weekend in a doubleheader against BU, but the snow covered Mike Kessock field was in a tough shape to play ball. They ended up playing at Boston University, where the Maine girls got a reality check, losing both games by the scores of 8-1 and 15-5. Tough weekend overall!!!

The girls are off to an average season right now having trouble to stick with a 500. winning pct. Considering the fact that they are a very young squad, we have to give them credit for being able to win 17 ou of a possible 35 games. I am sure they would like to replay those six straight losses in Florida which was their worst losing streak this season. All they need now is one win to be back at 500. Lets see what the girls are going to do this weekend. WELCOME

Welcome to the University of Maine's softball team blog. For the next couple of days I will be posting different features on the girls and hopefully fill you in on your favourite team. Why did I choose the softball team? These girls are unbeleivable. Great energy on and off the field, extremely fun to be around, but what hit me the most when i met these girls was how loyal they are to eachother and how reliable and accepting they were towards me.
